Letter of support from the Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Durban, South Africa
It is with pleasure that I endorse and support the 6th African Microfinance Conference which is scheduled to be held at the Durban International Convention Centre, voted Africa's Leading Conference Centre for 9 years.
Today, microfinance plays a major role in the development of many African nations. Its impact is substantial enough to have warranted acknowledgment by the United Nations which declared 2005 "The international year of microfinance," reminding people that millions worldwide benefit from microfinance activities. The goal of Microfinance is to provide "booster shots" and financing that will enable small businesses to expand, providing employment and contributing to national development in line with the National Development Plan as outlined by our Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manual.
Durban and KwaZulu-Natal are renowned for their commitment to invest in meeting related infrastructure and events. Durban and KwaZulu-Natal will thus be an ideal venue for an event of the stature of the 6th African Microfinance Conference.
As Mayor of eThekwini, I would like to urge all sectors both private and public, within and outside the boundaries of eThekwini, to support this event thereby ensuring that it is a success.
